EFT was developed by Gary Craig, an ordained minister and personal
performance coach. Gary developed much of this technique learning
most of the core ideas from Dr. Roger Callahan who developed a similar
technique called Thought Field Therapy (TFT). Here’s a brief
description of EFT as described by the EFT home website (www.emofree.com):
EFT is a new discovery that has provided thousands with relief from
pain, diseases and emotional issues. Simply stated, it is a
unique version of acupuncture except you don’t use needles.
Instead, you stimulate well-established energy meridian points on
your body by tapping them with your fingertips. The process is easy
to memorize and is portable so you can do it anywhere. It launches
off the EFT Discovery Statement which says...
“
The cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body’s
energy system.”
And because our physical pains and diseases are so obviously connected
with our emotions the following statement has also proven to be true...
“
Our unresolved negative emotions are major contributors to most physical
pains and diseases.”
This common sense approach draws its power from (1) time-honored
Eastern discoveries that have been around for over 5,000 years and (2) Albert
Einstein, who told us back in the 1920’s that everything (including
our bodies) is composed of energy. These ideas have been largely ignored
by Western Healing Practices and that is why EFT often works
where nothing else will. It’s not that EFT is so stunning (although
it may certainly appear that way to you). Rather, it is because conventional
healing methods have simply overlooked the obvious. You will see that
clearly as you allow EFT to bring freedom into your life where you
thought none was possible.
The main goal we are trying to accomplish with EFT is to take away
the emotional charge that accompanies thought. It is when your energy
system, your meridian channels (acupuncture system), start to “frizzle” when
you are having a negative thought that this emotional charge is created.
It’s as if your emotional response from your thought has crossed
over into your energy system (or maybe they are one in the same).
It is the “treatment”, or tapping, of the meridians while
experiencing thoughts of emotional discord that you will dissolve
the emotion connected to the thought. Once you disconnect the emotion
to the thought, you can freely move into a whole new possibility as
this belief or block will no longer have a grip on you. You will no
longer find yourself trying to protect yourself from experiencing
this hurt, or loss, or fear, etc. The emotion from the thought will
no longer be connected to your energy system in a negative way. Once
the emotional charge has been reduced or eliminated a newer, broader
perspective is now available to take the place of the negative one
causing the disruption. This is why the technique is called Emotional
Freedom Technique – you will gain emotional freedom from thoughts
that hold you back, consciously or unconsciously.
