Newsletter - November 2007
Written by Neil Hansen, Owner, MAT Specialist, RTS, CTA Life Coach
It has been a while since our last newsletter but since there have been so many changes within Fitness Werks I felt it was the perfect time to get this back up and running. It is my intent with this newsletter to keep you informed of the recent additions, changes, and "coming attractions" happening at Fitness Werks. It is also our commitment, not only as a business but also as a group, to continually work towards expanding our training, our equipment, our services, our thoughts, and our facility to bring you the most up-to-date, progressive, smart, and holistic service possible. For I believe, as Bill Owens so eloquently stated "...if you're not constantly moving forward, then - without a doubt - you're moving backwards."
New Logo - New Services
If you haven't noticed already, there's been a change in Fitness Werks' logo. The logo design is very much the same with the figure in the middle, the lettering around the figure and our name underneath. What has changed is the wording. Fitness Werks is slowly changing its identity from strictly a personal training studio to a Health and Wellness facility, which now shows under the Fitness Werks name. The words surrounding the figure in the middle now say the main services we offer: Personal Training, MAT, and Coaching.

Personal Training is the still the heart of Fitness Werks but the other two services are services we feel make us a well-balanced facility. For without some level of physical (MAT) and mental alignment (coaching) personal training would be somewhat fruitless. |
• |
MAT, which isn't so new to us anymore, has given us such advancement in how we approach each client as an individual. From evaluating and treating muscle imbalances and injuries to helping us create well rounded and client-specific exercise prescriptions, MAT has changed everything we do in regard to getting your physical body running better and more efficient. MAT is truly the way of the future and we are so happy to be on the ground floor of it all. |

As for the Life Coaching (Weight Loss Coaching), we've introduced this aspect of health and wellness as we feel that taking the physical action alone isn't always the fastest route to getting one to the results desired. We've learned that helping individuals get into alignment mentally as they progress through the physical tasks of exercise rewards them not only with faster results but also with tools to change other aspects of their life. |
Weight Loss Coaching
If you are like most people you are either struggling, or have struggled, to get to your desired body goals. Or maybe you've gotten to your goals and are struggling to keep them. If either situation is the case, you fall into one of two categories: either you are not doing all the things you believe you should do in order to get to your goals (or keep the results you've got) or you are doing those things but they are not rewarding you with what you thought or had hoped. We all can agree that there are 3 things we all believe one usually needs to do - physically - in order to change their health and their body: resistance training, cardiovascular activity, and eat a healthy diet. The reason why we either keep ourselves from doing these things or we don't get the results even when we do those things is because there is more to success then just the physical action. There is a human being behind the action with a certain mind set and specific beliefs that affect the outcome of any action. It all comes down to the fact that we humans have thoughts and we can't have a though without having an emotional response. Those emotional responses in turn create energetic/vibrational (all cells vibrate) and chemical responses in the body. These energetic and chemical responses from your thoughts can make the difference between success and failure as they can drastically affect the efficiency of your body's response to physical action.
This is where coaching comes in. The Life Coaching (or in this case - Weight Loss Coaching) offered here at FW is designed to help you identify the thoughts and beliefs that are either sabotaging your results or are keeping you from doing the things you believe you need to do in order to allow changes to occur. So often the person experiencing the limitations can't see what is standing in their way of success, as they are the ones who have created the block(s). As a CTA certified life coach (along with several other educational sources from the past 7 years) I have been trained to listen for and identify those self-imposed barriers and beliefs that are blocking your true potential. For the past year and a half I have been working with clients to help them align their mental and physical action so they are both heading in the same direction. You see, if you are doing something that you hate doing, the chemical and energetic responses that happen in your body while doing the activity may very well nullify the intended results. And if you aren't doing the things you believe you must do in order to get the results you desire you're your vision of how to get there is skewed - meaning, you are not inspired by that path to get to your results. Either way, you have two choices: either change your beliefs or get inspired by the things you believe you need to do in order to get there.
With help from other professionals in the coaching industry and taking guidance from the experience of working with clients, I have devised a few simple processes to help individuals identify and work through hidden agendas and mal-aligned beliefs that hamper their physical journey. These processes and ideas are going to be conveyed in my two upcoming books but I've made these processes available through the facility with one-on-one coaching as well as creating take-home worksheets available upon request from the trainers. Each trainer at Fitness Werks is equipped with enough knowledge to help guide you through the worksheets if you need help and feel that one-on-one coaching is beyond your needs at the time. Take the time to fill these worksheets out so you can gain a broader perspective as to whether you are mentally and physically heading in the right direction or not Ð or at least maximizing both ends of the mental and physical. The two processes are called the Goal Sheet and the Belief - Action List.
New Trainer
Fitness Werks has recently added a new face to the team of trainers working out of Fitness Werks. Amanda Mason, born and raised in Clarendon Hills, graduated from Indiana University at Bloomington where she received a Bachelor's Degree in Kinesiology with a concentration in Fitness Specialist and Public Health. Amanda has worked in the health and fitness field for seven years gaining experience in rehabilitation, patient care, sports training, personal training, health promotions, and health education. She is committed to continuing her education and is currently working on obtaining her certification in Muscle Activation Techniques. Having gone through the bulk of the internship she has also been exposed to the other avenue of education Fitness Werks uses called RTS (Resistance Training Specialist). She has undergone beginning level of courses and will soon begin the Mastery Level training in 2008. With her extensive education, amazing personality and spirit, Amanda is a perfect fit for the direction FW is heading.
Recent Certifications
Both Carrie Ninness and Ryan Kavanaugh completed the 10-month long MAT Internship held from June '06 through this past March, which also happens to be the same internship Amanda attended. Carrie tested out in September to become our 3rd Certified Specialist at Fitness Werks (following Neil - Jan 04 - and Lewis Balentine - May 05). Ryan is planning his test out date for January 2008. And Matt, who's at the level of MAT Trainer, currently does not have plans to test out but does still use the technique with clients on a need by need basis. Fitness Werks is one of two facilities in Illinois hosting 6 or more trainers who are trained in the MAT and RTS methods, both of which happen to be the highest level of education one can get through a certification in the health and fitness field (note: both programs are soon to be College Accredited courses applied to both bachelor and master degrees).
New Equipment
If you've worked out here in the past 6 months you've noticed the changes we've made in regard to new equipment (if not, you can go to our website [fitness-werks.com] to check out the recent photos of the additions) - almost everything in the gym is new. Our new equipment, 6 new Nautilus resistance pieces (to add to the 3 new pieces we put in during the summer of 05), the new Cybex Arc Trainer, and the LifeFitness treadmill were all chosen for their advanced design and durability. Fitness Werks now is one of very few fitness studios in the state that has this line of advanced training equipment. Couple our state-of-the-art equipment with our extensive education and Fitness Werks is unrivaled as a leading edge facility.
